The 10th Meeting

First of all, congradulations to those members who have participated in today's meeting. Since KMUSTC provides us with a perfect environment for not only parcticing English-speech ability, but learning and receiving the latest information that is quite useful and informative in our daily life, I suppose you guys must acquire a lot from it. ^^

During the speech session, we had the opportunity to get to know each other very well by the speaker doing his or her C1speech; what's more, through C2 speaker Wendy Tang's "lecture", we realised the danger of the "sweet" substance--aspartame, which is indeed toxic. In special session, thanks to Jonas, we were able to understand that "Courage comes with practice.", and I believe the idea can be applied to many situations where you want to have some commitment while the fear is filled with your mind. Well, the best to overcome the problem is to embrace the fear-to ackonwlege it-then conquer it. Hopefully the saying will come your mind when stepping on the stage.

In table topics session, we discussed about travel including the place we want to visit most, the meaning of travel as well as how to attract more foreign tourist coming to Taiwan(through the internet or filming, etc.), I hope that this topc will give us a whole new idea about traveling.

Once again, thank you guys coming to the meeting tonight. You will learn more in the following conferences.

Greeting Party For Toastmasters 2008

Well, greeting party for Toastmasters 2008 was finally over! This was the first time for us these dear officers to arrange and hold this kind of "meeting". I suppose we all have acquired many precious experiences from it. I particularly have to say thank you on behalf of all of the officers to Grace, Jonathan, Ruby and Mayna to participate in our party during weekdays, when you all must be as busy as bees! The party wouldn't be as astonishing as it was yesterday! As the VP-PR of the club, I have to say thank you to the officers to make the party successful. You all did a great job! May you guys continue to take out your enthusiasms and devote yourselves to the club in the future. You can definitely learn something from the gathering. Once again, welcome everybody to join us!

Today was our second to last meeting, the 7th, for the semester!
The Toastmaster of the Evening was Jonas Liu, our VP Education- who did an excellent job in preparing, running the meeting and making sure it went smoothly.

Thank you to Grace Shih, DTM, for running our special session today. She showed us how wonderful the world of Toastmasters is by letting us watch two champion speakers from the convention of 2003: Casey Lin for her Humorous Speech and Joyce Wu for her International speech on her father. Both were inspiring in their quality, attention to detail, and impact.

The Table Topics Session was conducted by Emily Wu, whose theme today was on the earthquake that just hit SiQuan, China a few days ago. Her questions prompted us to think more deeply about what it meant to Taiwanese, who experienced the 912 earthquake, and how we could help. Well done, everyone! Many brave members came up today for the table topics, let's give them a round of applause!

Doris Liu, was our Evaluation Session Master this time, and as usual, she did a fine job in pointing out what needed to be improved. Our meeting did not officially begin until 7:15 PM today, as we were waiting for members to trickle in. Hopefully we'll do better at our last meeting!

Thank you to our Timer 品紓 and our Ah Counter 京澤 for providing us with careful feedback. Grace performed double duty today as our language evaluator, giving us many helpful tips.

As usual, President Jessica presented the awards:
Best Speaker: Lawrence Huang
Best Table Topic Speaker: Eric Liang
Best Evaluator: Catherine Chang
Best Session Master: Jonas Liu
Most Improved Speaker: Chung Yi Lin

The final segment of the meeting was thanking our senior members and sponsors for all they have done for us this semester, including a little sweet gift to show the appreciation from KMUSTC.

As VP-PR, I also want to take the opportunity here to thank the six other officers:
Jessica, Jonas, Jyun Cheng, Maurice, Vanessa, and Conan. It was a pleasure working with your guys this semester, and I think we have gone a long way as a team. Like I said, I regret that we were not able to meet sooner or work together for a longer period of time. And, if you couldn't tell, I was really touched with the flowers...it was a pleasant surprise. I will miss you all in Taipei. Thanks for your hard work and keep it up. To all KMUSTC members: continue to pour your efforts into the club! You will gain much and learn much, as I have in these short months. For those of you who are rising stars in KMUSTC: whether its is because you have won an award or gave a really great speech or have come to all the meetings or just want to give more time to Toastmasters, consider running for officer next year! You will be able to see first hand and experience how large the Toastmaster family is! The skills, connections, and friendships you form here will be with you wherever you go. Thank you all for your support and patience with your first VP-Public Relations. It was an honor.

Meeting 6 Summary

Thank you to everyone who arrived early today!
Our meeting began at 7:05 PM, and we are making steady improvement.

There were several firsts at this meeting.
Lawrence, the VP-PR was the Toastmaster of the Evening, marking the first time that a member
took this position. Many thanks to our Senior members and Sponsors who spent their time role
modeling for us so that we could reach this new stage in KMUSTC. From now on, we'll be putting more members into session master positions, and after C4 speeches, members will be promoted to be evaluators as well. KMUSTC, we are steadily moving upwards!

Today's theme was Mother's Day, and both the Table Topics Session, led by session master Jonas Liu
and the special session, used this theme. The special session was a charades game with a Mother's day Theme. Everyone who attended the meeting, including guests, were divided into two teams. For every 1 minute round, each team earn points by guessing correctly the clue word explained to them by their team representative. Each clue was related somehow to mothers, and the restriction for the team representative was that he/she must use the word "mother" in his or her explanation, without using hand gestures. There were three rounds total, and at the end of the game: Both Team A and Team B had the same number of points! Almost everyone agreed that the interaction and team bonding added something more to the meeting today.

Jonas thoughtfully organized a powerpoint to get everyone thinking about mother's day. Each question asked us to reflect upon stories in which members explained their gratitude for their moms.

A big thanks to John Huang, who at the last minute took on the position of Evaluation Session Master.

At this meeting, President Jessica presented the awards for:
Best Speaker: Emily Wu
Best Table Topics Speaker:
Best Evaluator:
Best Session Master: Jonas Liu

Thank you to Evan for being our Timer, 盈佑 for being Ah Counter, and Tiffany for giving us our Language Evaluation report!

Behind the scenes, one final thanks to all the officers involved in making the special session game materials as well as planning in advance all the details to allow this meeting to run smoothly!

Happy Mother's Day to All!

Meeting 4! 3/30! Theme: Attitude

Tonight, KMUSTC concluded yet another great meeting. Our Toastmaster of the Evening, Catherine Cheng, graciously conducted the meeting, and made sure everything was run smoothly.
Four members gave their C1 speech icebreaker: David Wu, Wanda Tsai, David Yun, and Clarice Chen. Congratulations to you all for taking the first step. Thank you for being well prepared and rising above expectations. For those of you who have yet to speak, volunteer quickly! Standards will only get higher and higher as you wait on the sidelines, which is clearly evident tonight. :)
Lillian Tseng, the Table Topics Session Master, provided us with a great topic: specialty foods of Taiwan. Members were asked to draw out at random a particular food item, asked to describe the dish, indicate why they liked or disliked it, and explain why the item is unique or special. No pushing or pressuring was needed, we had five people volunteer to speak: Edward Lee, Casey Lin, our Area D governor, Ben Johnson, a guest, Anita and ! Food items ranged from stinky tofu to bubble milk tea to bell fruit/wax apple and lychee. YUM!
Jonathan Chen, as the General Evaluator, led a really strong group of Evaluators tonight: Synex Ko, Tina Yu, Tracy Wu, and Dennis Pan. Thank you, senior members, for taking your time to support us and encourage us! Thank you also to Maurice, our Treasurer, and Edward for being our Ah counter and Timer and keeping everyone on their toes.
Thanks again to Tiffany for being our Grammarian tonight. Like always, her report was extremely helpful to all of us as she mentioned not only grammatical errors but tips for speech structure and organization.
As a conclusion, President Jessica passed out lucky cookies to wish all members success on the upcoming midterms.

Congratulations to those that recieved "The Best" awards:
Best Session Master: Lillian Tseng
Best Evaluator: Tracy Wu
Best Table Topics Speaker: Edward Lee
Best Speaker: David Yun

Our next meeting is 4/20, 7 PM again in A3!

Good luck with those midterms!

KMUSTC Meeting No. THREE!!

March 16th, 2008

Today, due to a fever, President Jessica was unable to attend, so VP-PR Lawrence served as the Acting-President. The Toastmaster of the Evening is the extremely capable and always cheerful Doris Liu.

The Manual Speech Speakers were:
Maurice Lee C1
Lawrence Huang C1
Ruby Lin C1

The Evaluation session master was Kathy Shih, leading her team of evaluators:
Jonathan Chen
Ted Tu
Tina Wen
respectively evaluating the speakers in the order above.

Everyone, congratulations on a job well done!

There was also an education orientation on the various roles involved in conducting a successful Toastmasters meeting by Lillian Tseng. Thank you Lillian!
Her powerpoint presentation can be found here:

The Table Topics Session today composed of four brave contestants making speeches about the theme of "Time", hosted by session master Jenny Hung. She is also a fellow student of KMU, who is part of ALEmax since last year!
The questions were:
If you were given 1 extra hour a day to have 25 hours a day, how would you use your time?
If you were given 1 less hour a day to have 24 hours a day, how would you rearrange your schedule?
If you have a time machine to travel back to the past, what time of your life would you return to and why?
If you have a time machine to travel back to the past, what would you do differently?
The speakers were:
蘇緯哲
林中一
Emily Wu
Maurice Lee
Because the speakers were not decided previously, Jenny called out random names from a list-which was both a cruel and exciting method to conduct Table Topics! Thanks to those that volunteered and especially to those that braved the challenge!

Ah Counter for this meeting was Emily Wu while the Timer was Sunny Chen. Thanks to both who participated!

The Grammarian was Tiffany Taulton who did a great job of pointing out common mistakes made by the speakers. She also made constructive comments about the importance of speech organization-whether using a theme, a chronological outline, or an outline by topic that is emphasized in the introduction.

A move was made during the meeting to alter the time for our next meeting due to the long weekend as well as midterms beginning of April.

Due to the midterm exams early April, the next meeting will be held on Sunday, 3/30/2008, again in NB603 at 7 PM sharp! PLEASE BE ON TIME!

See you there!!

Area D3 Speech Contest! NB603!!

Saturday 3/16/2008!
There was both a prepared speech contest and a table topic contest. All 5 clubs sent one representative into each category, totally 10 contestants in all!

For KMUSTC, John Huang, our sponsor and mentor, delivered a prepared speech titled,
"The Precious Gift". Congratulations John, for winning third place in the Prepared Speech Contest!

For KMUSTC, Lawrence Huang, the VP of Public Relations, was the Table Topics speaker. Today, the Table Topics question posed to the contestants was:
If you had the power to improve Taiwan immediately, what would you do?
Congratulations Lawrence, for winning the second place in the Table Topics Contest!

The top three winners of the contest was awarded a certificate, while the top two speakers in each category will represent Area D3 to attend the Division D Contest in 成功大學醫學院 on March 29th, 2008!!

KMUSTC Meeting No. TWO!!!

March 2nd, 2008!

Today we had our first in club Table Topics contest. For those of you who don't know, Table Topics is the Toastmaster equivalent of impromptu speech. The speaker is asked a question, and he/she will answer by making a speech 1 minute to 2 minutes and 30 seconds in length to the audience.

Time to prepare? The time it takes to walk from your seat to the podium!
Out of the three questions, one was chosen for ALL contestants:
If you could be an animal, what animal would you be?

The other two questions that were prepared but not chosen were:
If you could travel back in time and talk to yourself when you were ten years old, what would you say?
If you could give a gift to the one you loved most, what would you give?

February 24th 2008!! The First Official Meeting of KMU Student Toastmasters!!

Our club, KMU Student Toastmasters Clubs (KMUSTC) has officially been chartered! Today, February 24th, we held our first meeting!

Ariel Tzan

Congratulations to Edward Yu for winning the Best Speaker Award at this meeting!
